Heli-hydrant

Toward the ultimate goal of being a fire-wise community, NHFSC member Gerald Schoelen took the lead on a feasibility study for installing a heli-hydrant on one of our canyon rims. We connected and are partnering with SD Fire Department, SD Zoo Safari Park and City of San Diego Open Space Division (among others) in these early stages. On August 26, 2025, residents Rachel, Bob, and Susan, as well as Chief MacFarland (Air Operations Chief for the SDFD) and Chief Fisher (Dispatch Chief), and Gerald, made a site visit to Ellison Place – candidate location for this hydrant. Check out whalingfire.com for a short video demonstrating the capability of this possible fire safe asset.

On August 27, 2025, we of NHFSC traveled to Safari Park to witness a live training. We were joined by Poway and Rancho Penasquitos Fire Safe Councils, as well as personnel from Cal Fire, SDFD, SDPD, SD District Attorney’s office, and Safari Park’s Security Division. Check back for updates as we explore this fire safe opportunity.
