Susan Redelings is a native San Diegan, born and raised with a strong community connection. The only daughter in a large family, she attended public local schools before earning a scholarship to The University of San Diego, where she completed a BA in English Literature and a Legal Assistant certificate. Married her high school sweetheart in 1973 after working with his band for her Junior Prom. They have four children—three sons and one daughter—all successful with families and homes in San Diego and Milwaukie. She worked for 22 years at regional law firms and actively volunteers in community organizations and events. A self-proclaimed professional chatterbox, she loves giving back to her hometown by guiding local 4th graders through Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala, all while spoiling her 11 grandchildren. Susan and her family are survivors of the June 30, 1985 Normal Heights Fire and, prompted by locally engaged and activist residents on this southern rim of Mission Valley, Susan stepped up to start this fire safe council as a platform to make the Normal Heights neighborhood fire safe through community engagement.
Bob Redelings is a second-generation San Diegan who has lived and worked in the area his entire life, specializing in electromagnetics and antenna systems. In retirement, you enjoy hobbies like model airplane flying, restoring vintage guitar amplifiers, and playing guitar in an Irish band. He and his wife have lived in their Normal Heights canyon home since 1980, raising four children and welcoming 11 grandchildren. Bob’s experience with the devastating Normal Heights Fire of 1985 has shaped his deep concern for community safety, infrastructure, and fire prevention. Through his technical background and firsthand experience, he advocates for resilient urban planning and protective measures to safeguard residents.
Jen Eve Thorn is a writer living in San Diego. She produced new plays for 18 years as the founder and recently retired Executive Artistic Director of MOXIE Theatre, and is currently working on a novel.
Madison Stevens moved to San Diego from Indianapolis in 2022 and was thrilled to buy her first home in Normal Heights. As a design leader, she is passionate about creating thoughtful, human-centered experiences and applying that same empathetic, problem-solving to neighborhood planning and supporting the Normal Heights Fire Safe Council. She loves the ocean, playing beach volleyball, practicing yoga, and exploring San Diego’s unique neighborhoods.
Jim Baross has contributed to cycling safety policies through his involvement with organizations like the League of American Bicyclists and various advisory committees. The League has supported initiatives such as safe passing laws, complete streets policies, and bicycle-friendly state rankings to improve cycling infrastructure and safety. Additionally, he has worked on state bicycle and pedestrian plans that help shape transportation strategies to support safer cycling environments. Jim’s advocacy has likely influenced local and state efforts to enhance road safety for cyclists.
